‘Dragon Tattoo’ Earns Writer’s Guild Nomination

(Reuters) – “Bridesmaids”, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “The Help” were among the movie nominees for the Writers Guild Awards (WGA) on Thursday in a surprise list of omissions and dark horses.

“The Descendants” and Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” also earned screenplay nominations. But likely Oscar contenders “War Horse” and political drama “The Ides of March” failed to gain a mention while French silent movie “The Artist” was ineligible under WGA rules.

Instead cancer dark comedy “50/50″, and “Young Adult” picked up nominations for best original screenplay, along with the little-seen indy drama “Win Win” starring Paul Giamatti as a high school wrestling coach.

The Martin Scorsese film “Hugo”, and “Moneyball” rounded out the 10 nominations for adapted and original screenplays.

The Writers Guild Awards will be handed out at ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles on February 19.

An Exclusive Look at the Making of Dragon Tattoo’s Stunning Titles

We’re still haunted by the oozing hands that smushed Lisbeth Salander’s lovely face in David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s title sequence. But what sort of Dragon Tattoo imagery is hidden amongst all these tangled vines of USB cables and “primordial dream ooze”? We spoke with co-founder of Blur and the title sequence’s creative director, Tim Miller, to uncover what sort of secret messages are hiding inside Lisbeth’s nightmare.

In a previous interview with the movie’s director, David Fincher, we learned all about Miller and his work on the titles at Blur. Now the man himself has shared how he and Fincher collaborated to bring this real-life fever dream to life — and he’s given io9 a handful of gorgeous stills from the title, two video breakdowns, plus the official title sequence (which you can see at the bottom). But first, let’s break it down.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Earns Producers Guild Nod

LOS ANGELES — The historical epic “War Horse,” the Deep South drama “The Help,” the silent film “The Artist” and the wedding comedy “Bridesmaids” are in the running for top honors from the Producers Guild of America.

Also nominated Tuesday for the guild’s big film prize are two George Clooney tales: the family drama “The Descendants” and the political saga “The Ides of March.” Two Paris stories made the cut, the family adventure “Hugo” and the romantic fantasy “Midnight in Paris.”

Rounding out the 10 nominees are the thriller “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and the sports tale “Moneyball.”

Animated contenders for the Jan. 21 awards are “The Adventures of Tintin,” “Cars 2,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Puss in Boots” and “Rango.”

Along with honors from other Hollywood professional groups such as actors, directors and writers guilds, the producer prizes help sort out contenders for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24.

The Producers Guild field represents a heavy-hitting lineup of Oscar winners and nominees, including Steven Spielberg (“War Horse” and “Tintin”), Martin Scorsese (“Hugo”), Woody Allen (“Midnight in Paris”), David Fincher (“Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Alexander Payne (“The Descendants”) and Bennett Miller (“Moneyball”).

Besides starring in “The Descendants,” Clooney multi-tasked on “Ides of March,” directing, producing, co-starring and co-writing.

Sequels Still Planned

It feels kind of weird to say that director David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has performed somewhat below expectations at the box office to date.

On the one hand, it’s a $90 million project from a high-profile filmmaker that is based on an international best-selling novel that has only grossed $60 million in the U.S. so far; on the other hand, it’s an extremely adults-only, R-Rated murder mystery full of graphic content and fatalistic atmosphere that’s been generating excellent word-of-mouth. So, those financial returns are about as good as one could (reasonably) expect.

Nonetheless, there’s been some question as to whether or not Sony is actively pressing ahead with an adaptation of the next installment in author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire, because of Dragon Tattoo‘s so-so box office performance. According to EW, that is in fact the case.

A Sony representative informed the publication that Girl Who Played with Fire remains on-target for a late 2013 release date. Dragon Tattoo leads Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are likewise reportedly already signed on to reprise their roles as Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively, in both the sequel and the (for now, theoretical) third franchise chapter, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

Dragon Tattoo writer Steve Zaillian is in the early stage of scripting Girl Who Played with Fire, which Fincher has the option to direct. While he has not yet committed to the project, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker has admitted that (should he sign on) he would prefer to shoot both the second and third Millennium book adaptations back-to-back, for both practical and artistic purposes.

Low Box Office Start Leaves Sequels A Mystery

How exactly to judge “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s” disappointing box-office start — and what it means for the prospects of filming the next two installments in the “Millenium” trilogy — is a mystery worthy of one of Stieg Larsson’s thrillers.

On the surface, it appears to be a case of a high-profile murder at the multiplex, where David Fincher’s film finished with $19.4 million over the four-day holiday weekend — a distant fourth behind “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.”

Considering all the traditional and social media buzz over Rooney Mara’s Oscar-worthy performance as the heavily pierced and emotionally damaged heroine Lisbeth Salander leading up to the film’s release last Tuesday, those numbers are a disappointment.

“You think it would be a presold property, but there is just so much competition for the intelligent moviegoing audience out there,” says Anne Thompson, lead blogger and editor of the “Thompson on Hollywood” blog. “What it does suggest is that there was no need to bring this out during Christmas because it’s neither an Oscar contender nor a family-friendly movie.

“Honestly, this film would have been better off if they waited until February.”

Despite the circumstantial evidence, though, it may be premature to bury “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

“This is the week that adults come out and that’s not necessarily the movie the people would have seen over Christmas,” says Nikki Finke, founder and editor in chief of Deadline.com. “But from today all the way through next Monday is the adult time at movies and there isn’t that much out for adults, with the exception of smaller movies like ‘The Descendants.’ ”

Dragon Tattoo $13 Mil Weekend Gross

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo grossed $13 million in it’s debut this weekend, and has grossed $21 million overall since opening on Wednesday.

The best-seller adaptation The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had a solid debut of $13 million, good for fourth place. While the opening met many analysts’ expectation, Mumpower says the debut was “acceptable but far from exciting.”

Mumpower says the David Fincher film, an adaptation of the grisly Swedish tale, “was not timed well for Christmas week.”

“The feel-bad movie of the holiday season should find wider popularity over the next seven days,” he says. “If not, it is going to be perceived as a box office disappointment independent of its quality.”

Critics and fans were solidly behind the movie, according to the amalgam site Rottentomatoes.com. About 85% of the nation’s critics gave it a thumbs-up, while 84% of audiences enjoyed it, the site says. The movie, which opened Wednesday, has grossed $21.4 million.
